My primary vision for this building was to create a “lantern in the landscape” – a structure that would glow with warmth and welcome as dusk falls over the surrounding hills. I wanted to design a space that feels both impressively modern and deeply connected to nature.
The design is defined by its prominent gabled roof, a contemporary take on a timeless architectural form. Beneath it, the main structure is conceived as a transparent glass volume, supported by a dynamic, rhythmic skeleton of wooden trusses. This transparency is crucial; it dissolves the boundary between the interior and the surrounding environment, allowing occupants to feel immersed in the landscape while being sheltered within. During the day, it’s filled with natural light; at night, it radiates a soft, golden light outwards.
The extensive use of warm wood for the structural elements and cladding was chosen to contrast with the cool glass and to bring a sense of natural comfort and elegance to a large-scale building. My goal was to create a landmark that is not imposing, but inviting – a beacon of light and craftsmanship that offers a sanctuary-like experience.
